IACUC Process Steps (What to Expect with the IACUC Review Process)

Full Committee Review (FCR) Process:

Meeting Schedule: IACUC meetings are held once a month. Submissions must be received by the submission deadline (i.e. two business weeks before the convened meeting) to be reviewed at the upcoming meeting.

Check the IACUC Meeting Schedule

  1. Pre-Review: The IACUC conducts a pre-review of the submission. Comments and feedback are compiled during this pre-review. This step in the process takes one business week.
  2. Feedback to PI: The compiled comments and feedback are sent back to the PI. The PI (or members of the PI group) revises the submission or provides necessary clarifications. The PI or PI Group has one business week to integrate the committee's feedback.
  3. Resubmission: The PI or PI Group ensures the revised submission is sent back to the IACUC in time for the scheduled meeting. If the PI Group submits on behalf of the PI, the PI will need to certify the submission.
    IACUC Meeting:
  4. Full Committee Review: The IACUC reviews the revised submission during the meeting. Possible outcomes of the meeting include:
    - Approval: The submission is approved as is.
    - Withhold Approval: The submission is not approved.
    - Require Modifications to Secure Approval: The submission requires further modifications before it can be approved. If your submission required modification to secure approval, please budget for an additional three business days in your review timeline.

Multiple Rounds of Revision: If modifications are required, the PI revises the submission again and resubmits it. This process may repeat multiple times until the submission meets the IACUC's requirements.

Designated Member Review (DMR) Process:

  1. Submission Interception: If the submission is eligible for DMR, the submission will be routed accordingly. What Types of Submissions Are DMR Eligible?
  2. Review: A designated member(s) of the IACUC reviews the submission. Please budget for three business days in your review timeline.
  3. Feedback to PI: The reviewer may send back comments and feedback to the PI. The PI (or members of the PI Group) revises the submission based on the feedback or provides necessary clarifications.
  4. Resubmission: The PI resubmits the revised submission to the IACUC. If the PI Group submits on behalf of the PI, the PI will need to certify the submission.
  5. Review of Revised Submission: The designated member(s) will review the revised submission. Please budget for three business days in your review timeline if your submission is revised and resubmitted for review.
  6. DMR Outcomes: The designated member reviews the resubmitted submission.
Possible outcomes of the DMR include:
    - Approval: The submission is approved as is.
    - Send to FCR: The submission is forwarded to the Full Committee for further review.

Multiple Rounds of Revision: If the submission is not approved or requires further modifications, the PI revises and resubmits it.
This process may repeat multiple times until the submission meets the IACUC's requirements or is forwarded to FCR.
